FRANCE RATIFIED THE UN CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

 

"When societies and communities meet the needs of all people equally, including people with disabilities, the benefits go beyond individuality, reflecting on the success of society as a whole. Although these ideals are not achieved, the Convention is one of the most powerful tools with which we have to pursue them."

These were the words expressed by the Director of the Division of Human Rights Treaties of the United Nations High Commissioner United Nations, Mr. Ibrahim Salama, during development of the third session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held at United Nations headquarters in Geneva. With these references the crucial role the committee plays in the effort to eliminate injustice, inequality and discrimination.

France joined this effort, the last day February 18, 2010 ratifying the Convention, thus reaching the 80 countries.

This meeting will cover the structure and role of national mechanisms to ensure implementation and monitoring of the Convention.

Moreover, the United Nations agencies have developed the World Report on Disability to be published in the coming months by WHO in collaboration with the World Bank.
